“Atomic Cats” is a digital painting developed from a large pen and ink drawing called “The Atomic Priests of San Onofre”. It depicts the aging San Onofre Nuclear Facility in North County San Diego which houses tons of irradiated water sitting on the a picturesque coastline, the San Andreas fault, and the Camp Pendleton base: a nexus of impending environmental disaster and imperial violence. The clock-cat Felix keeps time, vacuously smiling, caring not for meaning or industriousness.

Glowing cats, or rather cats who are genetically engineered and then bred to glow in proximity to nuclear radiation, is one strategy that in theory, will deter future Earthling life forms, ten thousand years from now, from exposure to our unaddressed nuclear material. This biosemiotic theory posits that whatever intelligent life is on Earth in ten thousand years, some form of cat will also be there, as cats have some what co-evolved with humans since the rise of agriculture. Through art and storytelling, this legend of the glowing cat will presumably be passed along over ten thousand years to be well known by the future Earthlings.
